Field Guide

EPS Geofoam Installation Guide

EPS Geofoam is one of the fastest fill materials to install — no compaction equipment, no moisture control, and minimal weather sensitivity.

1

Prepare the Subgrade

Grade the subgrade to design elevation and compact to provide a stable, uniform bearing surface. Remove sharp rocks, debris, and organic material.

2

Establish Control Lines

Set string lines or laser level references to control alignment, grade, and block course elevations.

3

Place First Course

Place blocks in the first course with tight joints and correct alignment. Check each block for level and bearing contact with the subgrade.

4

Stagger Joints Between Courses

Each successive course must have joints offset from the course below by a minimum of 12 inches (24 inches preferred).

5

Cut Blocks as Needed

Use a hot wire cutter, reciprocating saw, or chainsaw to cut blocks for corners, transitions, and irregular geometries.

6

Install Connectors if Required

In areas with potential uplift or sloped fills, install barbed plastic connectors or apply water-based adhesive between block courses.

7

Place Protective Cover Promptly

Install the concrete load distribution slab, geomembrane, or compacted soil cover as soon as possible after block placement.

Important Cautions

  • Never allow vehicles to drive directly on unprotected geofoam
  • Keep all hydrocarbon sources (fuel, oil, solvents) away from geofoam
  • Do not use solvent-based adhesives — they dissolve EPS
  • Protect from open flames and prolonged UV exposure
  • Install protective cover before end of each work day

Always follow project-specific installation specifications and consult your supplier for guidance.
